To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Speech and Language Therapy in NUI Galway, we would like to invite you to a one day seminar on Evidence Based Practice called:
"Bercow and back again - practice, policy and its implications for children with speech and language and communication needs (SLCN)"
This CPD event will take place in the large lecture theatre in Áras Moyola (Ground Floor), NUI Galway on Friday, 14th June, 2013 from 10:00am until 4:00pm.
Outline of Day
The day will focus on the findings of the Better Communication Research Programme (BCRP), the largest practice related research programme ever funded for children with SLCN. The reports were made available by the Department for Education in England at the end of December 2012 on a dedicated website http://www.education.gov.uk/researchandstatistics/research/better.
Starting with an overview of the research programme and its outputs together with a little about subsequent policy developments such as the All Party Parliamentary groups report on Language and Social Disadvantage and a similar initiative currently being carried out by Save the Children. He will then focus in on two aspects of the BCRP. The first is the "What works for SLCN Resource combining SLT expertise and the best available published evidence. This has recently been converted to a web based format and those attending will be encouraged to use it. As a development of this we will also do some work on formulating evidence based research questions using the PICO format (Participant, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome). We will then move on to the Communicating Supporting Classroom Observation Tool developed to facilitate universal intervention in the first two years of primary school.
