Dear colleagues and guests,

On behalf of the local organizing committee, I am delighted to invite you to participate in the International Symposium on Herring: Linking biology, ecology and population status in the context of changing environments.  This conference is the first symposium on herring, in Europe, since the 1970’s.  It takes place from 26th to 29th August 2008 at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The Irish Local Organizing Committee is making every effort to ensure that your participation is scientifically rewarding and that pleasant memories of Galway and its surroundings will remain with you for a very long time.

The overall title of this conference is “Herring: Linking biology, ecology and population status in the context of changing environments”. The conference aims to draw together scientific disciplines including biology, ecology, oceanography, population dynamics and economics to achieve a synthesis enabling the management of herring populations in the 21st Century. The conference builds on other initiatives that have taken place in Europe and America in recent years.

The Linking Herring Science Committee spans Europe, Asia and North America.  Linking Herring will bring expertise and information on herring stocks in the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific regions together in a convivial and productive environment, in Galway in 2008. The Conference is co-sponsored by ICES, PICES and GLOBEC.

We look forward to receiving you in Galway, Ireland.  You will enjoy an excellent scientific program, be amongst friends and colleagues and enjoy that unique Irish hospitality.

Maurice Clarke
