Travel to Galway

Galway is situated on the West Coast of Ireland and may be easily reached by air, ferry, train, bus or car or a combination of these.

As a major tourist attraction, there are many well-developed transport options available. 

There are two airports in the western region, Knock Airport and Shannon Airport as well as Belfast Airport in the North and Cork Airport in the South of Ireland.

A number of options are available for delegates travelling from Dublin Airport:

  • An express bus service direct to Galway city departs from Dublin Airport hourly, journey time is approximately 3 hours. All buses are equipped with WiFi. 
  • By car, Galway city is approximately 2hr 20mins from Dublin Airport travelling on the M4/M6 motorways.
  • By train, Galway city (Ceannt Station) is approximately 2hr 45mins from Heuston Station, in Dublin city centre. Train travel times may vary, so please check the timetable on Irish Rail on the link below.

Driving to NUI Galway 

Road Directions:
University Road Entrance:

Arriving in Galway on the main N6 follow signs for the N59 (Galway-Oughterard/Clifden), crossing the river Corrib at the Quincentennial Bridge.  Immediately after the Quincentennial Bridge take a left turn at the traffic light controlled crossroads and follow the signs for City Centre/University/Hospital. Continue through 3 sets of traffic lights (approx. 1 km) to large junction with University Hospital on the right.  Take filter lane to the left onto University Road and the main entrance to NUI Galway is approximately 100 m from this junction on the left-hand side. 

Distillery Road Entrance:
Arriving in Galway on the main N6 follow signs for the N59 (Galway-Oughterard/Clifden), crossing the river Corrib at the Quincentennial Bridge.  Immediately after the Quincentennial Bridge take a left turn at the traffic light controlled crossroads.  The Distillery Road entrance is the first left after the petrol station.

St.Anthony’s Entrance:
Arriving in Galway on the main N6 follow signs for the N59 (Galway-Oughterard/Clifden), crossing the river Corrib at the Quincentennial Bridge.  Go through the traffic lights and take exit 5 at the next roundabout (bringing you back towards the Quincentennial Bridge) take a left turn at the traffic lights, St.Anthony’s Entrance is the first right.

Directions to Park & Ride Car Park at NUI Galway:
(Parking Permit MUST be displayed)
Arriving in Galway on the main N6 follow signs for the N59 (Galway-Oughterard/Clifden), crossing the river Corrib at the Quincentennial Bridge.  Go through the traffic lights and take exit 5 at the next roundabout (bringing you back towards the Quincentennial Bridge) take a left turn at the traffic lights and continue for 1 km, the entrance will be on your right after a large sign for Corrib Village, the Park & Ride Carpark is into the left after entering. 

Parking on Campus:

Parking is very limited on campus and clamping is in operation. There is limited parking for conference delegates, on campus, Monday to Friday from 08.30 to 17.30 and it is advised to take a taxi to the venue if possible.

Permits (available here) have been arranged to facilitate access to Orbsen Car Park - (highlighted on attached permit), spaces are limited and on a first come basis.  Please ensure to park in white line spaces only. These permits are available to registered delegates only and must be displayed at all times.

There are also a number of pay and display parking areas on campus (blue lined spaces).  Access is available to all car parks evenings (after 17.30). All illegally parked vehicles, including cars not displaying a permit will be clamped.

Travelling to Campus from Galway city Train and Bus Station

 

NUI Galway is aproximately 15 minutes walk from the bus and train station. A Galway city map is available here indicating the direction to the campus. Bus Eireann also provides a local bus service from Eyre Square that stops at the campus. A timetable is available here.

 

Corrib Village FREE Shuttle Bus

For those staying at Corrib Village during the conference, a complimentary shuttle bus is provided from Corrib Village to Eyre Square, which runs from 12.00pm - 8.00pm daily. This shuttle bus departs from Corrib Village reception every hour on the hour and picks up in Eyre Square at the Tourist Office on Forster St.* on the half hour as follows:

 

12.00 - Bus collects at Corrib Village & departs for Eyre Square

12.30 - Bus drops off in Eyre Square and picks up new passengers

13.00 - Bus drops off at Corrib Village and collects new passenger

13.30 - Bus drops off in Eyre Square and picks up new passengers

 

19.00 - Last bus leaves Corrib Village for Eyre Square

19.30 - Last bus leaves Eyre Square for Corrib Village

 

*The Coach Station is located next to the main bus and train station of Galway city. If you are arriving to Galway by train or bus please avail of this shuttle bus to bring you to Corrib Village.
