Dr. Tom O Connor passed away peacefully in November 2012, after a short illness. He made an immense contribution to the field of Occupational Health and Safety in Ireland over many decades (he “officially” retired in 1996, but this was merely a technicality!), and was instrumental to the development of the postgraduate programmes in Health and Safety at NUIG. He was very enthusiastic about the idea of holding a 21st Anniversary conference and
even went as far as to draft the following invitation to delegates:
“To mark 21 years of Occupational Health and Safety Post-graduate Courses at NUI Galway we are organising a celebratory event in Galway in June 2013 and we hope you will be able to join us. We would like to contact as many of our past students as possible and learn how your career developed since passing through the system. Please contact any others that you may know and alert them in case our message has not reached them.
We are always trying to improve the content of the courses and your experience, advice and suggestions would be welcome as we plan for the future in a different economic environment. We would also like to have your views on activities you would like to have in Galway. There has been an extensive building programme transforming the campus 8but the warm Fáilte go Gaillimh remains the same. We will also welcome back some former members of the teaching staff. “
At our conference in June, we intend to include an oral presentation on Tom’s life and work in the field of Health and Safety, and we look forward to hearing any memories that you have of him.
