Call for Papers Galway

The organisers welcome submissions of either:

• Sessions of 3 or 4 papers, on any topic of relevance to STEP

• Individual papers, linked to one of our suggested themes

We welcome submissions of papers or sessions related to any of the past STEP meeting themes (a list is available on the website), but also a focus on themes and areas which have so far been underrepresented in STEP (especially medicine and technology). We would particularly like to encourage contributions with a trans-national dimension (either within Europe, or relations beyond Europe), or with a philosophical/theoretical angle on the nature of peripheries and their significance in the history of science, technology and medicine.  We would also be interested to hear from anyone with ideas for alternative formats of sessions (e.g. workshops, roundtables etc).  Please get in touch via

Submission of paper and/or session proposals must be made electronically through the "Abstract Submission" section of this website. Proposals must be in PDF format.

a) Submission of a session
A single document should be submitted, containing all of the following information:
• name and affiliation of the session organiser
• title of the session
• 400-word abstract explaining the rationale for the session and its relevance to STEP
• abstracts of three or four papers (as above)

b) Submission of individual papers
A single document should be submitted through the website, containing the following information:
• name and affiliation of the author
• title of the paper
• 400-word abstract, making clear the relevance to STEP

c) Timetable:
31 October 2009:  Deadline for submission of paper and session proposals
15 December 2009:  Decision on accepted papers and sessions will be made public
1 May 2010:  Deadline for submission of final versions of papers for pre-circulation
17 June 2010: Arrive in Galway!

d) Membership of STEP
Conference participants are expected to be (or become) members of STEP.  Membership is free.  To join STEP (and the NODUS email list), please send a brief statement introducing yourself and your interests, to José Ramon Bertomeu (
